Flood Warning in Effect: Stay Safe Around Water

Updated: Sunday, April 19 at 4:00 p.m.

North Bay District (including Nipissing First Nation)
In effect until Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at 4:00 p.m.

The Ministry of Natural Resources – North Bay District has issued a Flood Warning. This means that flooding is imminent or occurring for residents in the southern areas of the Sturgeon and Upper Ottawa Watersheds.

Read the full Flood Warning notice from the Ministry of Natural Resources.

NFN Emergency Management attends daily SNF (Sturgeon, Nipissing, French River) water level meetings and continues to patrol Duchesnay, Yellek, Beaucage, and Jocko Point to monitor water levels, make sure roads remain accessible, and check for any water breaches.

Public Works will complete minor road repairs on Beaucage Park Road, and all roads across NFN are currently restricted to half loads.

Sand Available for NFN Residents

Sand is available for NFN residents to pack their personal sandbags (have or purchase your own) at the Jocko Point Fire Hall (as of Saturday, April 18).

NFN is prepared with sandbags and will release them only when required. In this event, NFN only provides sandbags to protect houses, driveways, and wellheads, not to stop shoreline erosion or waves.

Read NFN’s Flood Risk Management – Sandbag Policy.

Weather Conditions

The cold front that came in Sunday has slowed down water flow coming from Lake Temagami and the forecast has decreased rainfall.

Current Conditions

The French River Dams has increased discharge and water inflows are still high. Lake Nipissing is expected to increase at a rate of 6-8cm per day for the next five days.

Ice build up along the shorelines started Saturday evening after the wind changed to the east.

Safety Tips

  • Stay away from fast-moving or high water
  • Supervise children and pets near water
  • Avoid shorelines and riverbanks; they are slippery and unstable
  • Stay off lakes and rivers; ice is not safe

Protect Your Home

  • Consider cleaning your culvert to prevent blockage
  • Clear debris from gutters, eavestroughs, and downspouts
  • Check your sump pump (a pump that removes water from basements) and keep it working
  • Consider backup power, such as a battery or generator

Power Safety (Hydro One Customers)

  • If water reaches electrical outlets, baseboard heaters, or your furnace, call Hydro One at 1-800-434-1236 to have the power turned off safely.

Be Prepared

  • Restock your emergency kit
  • Monitor conditions closely if you live in a low-lying or flood-prone area
