Call for Harvesters Lake Nipissing Watershed

The Nipissing First Nation Environment Department is inviting community members who harvest within the Lake Nipissing Watershed to participate in an important environmental health study. We are seeking donations of tissue and liver samples from moose, deer, and partridge. These samples will be tested for the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of chemicals that can accumulate in the environment and food sources.

This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to better understand PFAS exposure in our region and to support the health and well-being of our community and the land. By contributing, harvesters will play a direct role in community-led research that combines traditional harvesting practices with modern scientific monitoring.

  • Each harvester who donates both tissue and liver (from the same animal) will receive a $150 honorarium.
  • Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis. A total of three specimens per species are being investigated.
  • All test results will be shared directly with participating hunters and included in the final report, ensuring transparency and respect for community knowledge.
