NFN Medical Student Host Opportunity Available

Nipissing First Nation Health Services is seeking a community member to host a visiting medical student this spring.

From April 25 to May 22, 2026, Michael Hubeny, a first-year medical student from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), will complete a community placement with NFN Health Services.

This placement offers medical students the opportunity to experience life in First Nations communities and gain a deeper understanding of the cultural values, traditions, and lived experiences that shape health and well-being. These experiences play an important role in helping future physicians provide care that is culturally safe, respectful, and responsive.

About Michael:

Michael is originally from Winnipeg and was raised in Red Lake. Before entering medical school, he worked in the mining industry and later as a nurse in the cardiac and stroke unit at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. He now lives in Thunder Bay with his wife.

In his free time, Michael enjoys building and fixing things, working on motors, restoring an imported Japanese car, cooking, and going for walks. During his time in NFN, he is looking forward to learning more about the health perspectives, cultural values, and spiritual traditions of Ojibway and Algonquin First Nations.

NFN Health Services is currently seeking accommodations for Michael during his placement. Compensation is available for the host.
