Leadership Transition at NFN

Nipissing First Nation is entering a new chapter as we prepare for an upcoming leadership transition. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brendan Huston has announced that he will step away from his role effective June 6, 2025, to take on a new position as Executive Director at the Anishinabek Nation. We thank Brendan for his five years of dedicated service, during which he helped lead many of the Nation’s most impactful initiatives.

“Serving NFN as the CEO has been more than a job, it has been a tremendous responsibility and a privilege; one that I will be forever grateful for,” Brendan says. “We successfully ratified and implemented the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement, advanced the Robinson Huron Treaty Past Annuities Settlement through coordination of the individual disbursements and Collective Fund development, built vital infrastructure, and launched transformative programs. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering dedication of our incredible team.”

To ensure a smooth transition and continued organizational stability, Donna Dodgson, current Chief Financial Officer, will step into the role of interim CEO while we undertake a robust recruitment process. Donna is a proud NFN member and experienced leader with a strong track record in financial management and organizational change. Her thoughtful leadership and collaborative approach will help us continue building on the momentum we’ve achieved.

“It’s an honour to step into this role and support our community during this transition,” says Donna. “I am committed to leading with care, collaboration, and continuity.”

Eric Schnell, Director of Administration and Technology, will take on expanded responsibilities to support software development growth across NFN. The additional tasks for digital transformation and internal process improvements will see the development of a new junior developer position to support this work. Additionally, Freda Martel, former Director of Administration, will return to support the Executive Services team during this transition.

We acknowledge that the CEO role is a demanding one, and Donna’s move will leave a temporary gap in our Finance Department. To ensure continued service, we will secure a short-term contract for financial support.

Brendan leaves NFN with a strong foundation and a united team. “I am most proud of the team we have built here… I have the utmost confidence in our Gimaa, Council, and NFN staff to continue to lead our Nation to a brighter and more prosperous future.”

Miigwech, NFN, for your continued trust and support.
