Child Care Centres

Nipissing First Nation childcare centres are operating at limited capacity and following all government and public health protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

As of September 2020, ALL daycare staff are required to wear face masks throughout the day, in addition to eye protection. Further, all school-aged children will be separated from preschoolers to avoid mixing cohorts as recommended by the Ministry of Education and Public Health. We are not accepting new registrations at this time due to reduced capacity and limited staffing.

For status updates, please visit Ontario’s online tool: COVID-19 cases in schools and child care centres – updated weekdays at 10:30 a.m

The Couchie Memorial Daycare Centre in Duchesnay and the Nipissing Ojibway Daycare Centre in Garden Village offer quality child care for children aged 18 months to 5 years of age and offer space for 5 toddlers and 16 preschool children.

Both centres are non-profit organizations, operated by Nipissing First Nation and licensed by the Ministry of Education under the Child Care and Early Years Act.

Our Children, Our Future

Nipissing First Nation Registered Early Childhood Education (RECE) teachers are embracing Ontario’s pedagogy of “How Does Learning Happen?” and the four foundations of Well-being, Expression, Engagement, and Belonging.

Learning through play supports the child’s physical, spiritual, social, emotional, and intellectual development each day.  The teachers take the child’s lead which guides our teacher-led activities as they are driven by the children’s interests. The child care centres provide a safe, secure, inclusive, healthy environment that alsoo promotes, supports and encourages the learning of Nbisiing Ojibway culture and language.

Our staff enjoy working with the children and making fun, lasting memories. Play is key, but our staff also teach children about self-care, dental hygiene, eating healthy and daily routines. Children also spend time with our Anishinaabemwin Language Worker learning songs, listening to stories and doing crafts. The daycare centers promote and encourage the learning of Nbisiing Ojibway culture, language, art and legends.
