The Community Health Program supports and assists clients with achieving health goals related to immunization, chronic disease and environmental health. Education, prevention and health promotion services are offered for all ages and stages of life for individuals, families and groups on a variety of topics.
Immunization Program
Registered Nurses certified in immunization delivery offer vaccines to infants, children, and adults according to provincial immunization schedules.
Annual influenza (flu vaccine) campaigns typically begin in October and run through to December with community clinics scheduled in Garden Village, Yellek and Duchesnay.
Chronic Disease Management
Support for individuals living with a chronic disease is available including working with the client’s primary care provider to monitor or bridge the gap between visits. Education sessions to increase awareness and management are offered in NFN including topics such as blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer screening.
Communicable Disease
The NFN pandemic plan is designed to prepare NFN in the event of a widespread outbreak of an infectious disease. The plan is monitored by the Community Health Program with testing and revision conducted on an annual basis.
Environmental Health
The Community Health Program works with the Environmental Health Officer (EHO) to coordinate inspections for septic, early learning centres and food premises in NFN. Follow-up on animal bites/ scratches is initiated by the EHO. Community water testing is conducted by the EHO.
The Food Handler Certificate Course is offered on an annual basis. This covers the general principles of safe food handling. Participants learn how to identify risks associated with foodborne illness and the skills necessary to handle food safely.
